Furthur RMA research props and settings All American Rejects
Similarly with Gives You Hell, there is a narrative that becomes clearer throughout the song. This as well introduces a comedic approach, therefore conforming to the conventions of an alternative rock music video. Particular visual elements used such as the rivalry between the neighbors and the rock star lifestyle being shown by the lead singer and his band mates tells us that this is an alternative rock music video. However with Gives You Hell the setting and décor is made to look similarly with that of as it com that lives in a suburban area. This connotes to the audience that the narrative of the music video is of a normal couple. However similarly with Fluorescent Adolescent, the narrative progresses and shows that the setting and décor doesn’t fit the narrative. The director may have chosen this for the same reason as the Fluorescent Adolescent; to be ironic. Because of the this the setting and décor do fit the alternative rock genre of music videos. With Gives You Hell the costumes are that of as urban couple and of rock stars. This would connote that there will be some sort of interaction between the2 different kind of people. The director may have chosen this to make sure the narrative can be seen visually as well as within the music video itself. Because they’re dressed in rock star clothes it does fit the alternative rock genre of music videos. The lead singer/frontman of the band is dressed differently to all the other people ion the video. However he plays 2people and therefore doubles the effect. This shows that they are the most important member of the band. In Gives You Hell the props used are amplifiers, megaphones, hoses, lawnmowers, microphones and instruments. This connotes to the audience that the band is a typical alternative rock band. This is because they have instruments and random props to go with the narrative of the music video. The director would have chosen these to make the video generic to the alternative rock genre. With the directors choice of the props used within the video, they have made the video fit to the alternative rock genre. In Gives You Hell the body language and movement would connote to the audience that the artists are atypical alternative rock band as the style is conventional to the genre. The director would have chosen this because the artists are renowned for this style of music video and wants to portray the same image. This therefore fits to the alternative rock genre. Different audiences might interpret this as conveying to the mainstream policies of alternative rock and therefore lacking originality. The artist moves differently to everyone else to show that he’s the frontman. This creates the effect that he’s the most important member of the band.
Furthur Rma research props and setting Arctic Monkeys
With Fluorescent Adolescent it is easy to tell its an alternative rock video as it includes a comedic approach to the video as well as some form of narrative which is conventional with most alternative rock music videos. In particular the visual elements within the video such as the concept of gangsters fighting clowns, and a narrative that doesn’t go with the song, shows that this is a alternative rock music video.
In Fluorescent Adolescent the setting and décor of the music video is ‘grainy’, similar or that of a drama film or programme. This connotes to the audience that there is a deep storyline to the music video. The director may have chosen this to be ironic as the actual narrative of the music video does not fit with the setting or décor of the actual music video. Although in doing this the music video does fit the alternative rock genre of music videos. With Fluorescent Adolescent the costumes are of gangsters and clowns. This may connote to the audience that the narrative of the music video is already not going to make a lot of sense. The director may have chosen this because he was looking to make the video as random as possible. It is because of the randomness of the costume and the storyline that it does in fact fit the alternative rock genre of music videos. In Fluorescent Adolescent the props in the video are bags, chains, cars, vans, chairs and boxes. These connote to the audience that as the majority of these props are used as weapons that there’s a lot of violence within the narrative of the music video. The director has most likely chosen them as they are typical weapons used by gangsters in hand to hand combat. As the props fit the narrative it does in a way fit the alternative rock genre of music videos.
RMA Costume research
Looking at similar bands to the kooks I have found that the
dress sense is extremely similar if no the same. I also found that the colours
is same as well, the main colour of the outfits worn by these bands is black.
This is the kooks as you can see they are wearing very basic
and dull clothing, the colour of the clothes is also black. This dress sense
matches the type of music the kooks produce and the label the band have
created. The type of music they produce matches the clothing as the music they
produce falls under the indie/alternative rock genre. The kooks are also an
independent band and this is shown by their basic clothing and the dull dark
colours which is what expected from these types of bands.
This is Imagine Dragons.
Imagine Dragons have connoted a brand and identity through there music,
by creating distinct sounds and compiling various genres into one song. Their
image connotes four people who I would say are normal, dressed in neutral
colours of black and not representing anything specific apart from themselves.
This is the Arctic Monkeys . The repeated use of denim and
dark clothing emphasises them as a typical indie rock band, as these are
clothes that are so often associated with the genre, though the carefully
selected look suggests that they focus just as much on image and projection as
they do on the music they play. Coinciding with this point, the lead singers
(Alex Turner) is slicked and styled into a noticeable quiff, which perfectly
matches the current hairstyle trends. Ultimately, this consolidates the band as
a well-known, mainstream indie rock band, what with the conformation to
clothing and trends, and the lack of any real posing showing that the public
will recognise them immediately, without need for any gestures or signs.

Mise-en-scene
Costume
Our genre of our music video is Alternative Rock to get that image across through the costume we want our band to wear, darkish clothes so black tops, jeans and maybe converse shoes. This type of clothing is similar to the indie bands that we have analysed so matching that image will appeal to the target audience, as its what they would expect from our band to be wearing, plus this type of clothing is the type of clothing worn by our generation of teenagers. Having the band wearing similar clothing to our target audience makes a connection between both band and audience which is what we want from our music video.
Props
The props we are going to use in our musci video would consist of a full band setup so drums bass microphone and a guitar. We will be using these props as these are the main props that are used in all music videos we have analysed. Having the instruments in our music video communticates the genre of our song and our music video is a performance video so we have to have some shots of the band actually playing their instrumnets like they would in a live performnace. Including the insturments in our piece also reprents the genre and matches the other indie rock music videos which is what the target audince expect from a indie rock music video.
Lighting
The lighting we are going to use in our musci vdideo will just be ordinary white lights that we be focussed on band just like they would in a live performnace. Having these low key dullish lights contributes to the style of video as indie bands are osscaited with independent labels which dont really have large budgets so they would have simplitic lights in their music videos and live performnaces and as we are filimg the band perform so we would also have to have the dull lights. Having these props also communicates the genre of the piece which appeals to the target audience.

Crew List
The crew consists of all 3 of our group. We will all be dividing tasks up between us but also having our own input on every aspect. Here is what each of us are focusing on:
- Adam: Filming
- James: Filming
- Lyle: Editing
Having one person focused on editing means they can start to edit the music video while other people in the group continue to film. Post production takes longer than production sometimes so this will be beneficaial.
During filming we are planning to film much more footage than we are expecting to need. This will allow us to choose a variety of different ideas during post production and if there any techincal problems this will help with for example, a loss of footge.

Feedback From propsal
Our proposal interview with Miss Dolby went really well as we managed to get across our idea and what we kind of wanted to do, however she did say that we need to research into the song we want to do into more depth as we need to understand what kooks fans like about the music videos the band creates. We also need to look at the lyrics line by line so we can understand some of the shots we want to include in our music video.

Mrs D
Your music video analysis is a little bit vague and general. You mention how important editing is and timing but are not specific enough so try and look at when certain camera angles are shot/used and how the music matches the visuals in terms of cutting to the beat and how this helps engage with the song. Think how audience feel and react.
